Nestling in a gentle bend of the River Parrett, the vibrant market town of Langport is a real gem in the Somerset Levels. With a sumptuous selection of cafes, pubs, markets, arts & crafts and Artizan shops there is a real buzz that can be followed on to the rivers and moors. The free parking over most of the town contributes to a genuinely relaxed atmosphere. Langport is a truly unique blend of pastoral tranquility with a friendly and positive feel. While you’re here, why not try out one of the many activities the town has to offer?
If you are early enough, there is always the chance to encounter an Otter on the river and with a thriving abundance of Fauna & Flora, you are spoiled for choice for bird life too. The Great Crane Project has successfully reared and released a large number of Common Cranes over the last few years so sightings are high on the list despite them being absent for over 400 years! Because of the nature of the Levels, the combination of wetlands and pasture land offer superb conditions for King Fisher, Heron, Swans, Barn Owls, Water Voles, Foxes and Badges. A trip on the river is a must for any wildlife enthusiast.
For the keen angler, the River Parrett and it’s smaller tributaries are stocked with every species of fresh water fish. Whether spinning for pike; trotting for Chubb; targeting Roach, Rudd & Bream or stalking the margins for wild River Carp, you are guaranteed a productive day. Take a boat to those hard to reach places to get closer to the action.
Muchelney Abbey to the West of the town is achievable on foot or by boat within an hour. The Viaduct to the east, is also achievable within the hour. Oath Lock can be visited within a half day or all of these beautiful destinations can be explored in a leisurely day.
Whether new to the water or an experienced paddler, taking a boat out on the River Parrett is an ideal way to explore the hidden delights of the Somerset Levels from a different perspective.
